youth centered colloborations - storywork bundle project

In the spring of 2019, a select group of Indigenous youth from Bernie Wolfe Community School met weekly for a series of hands-on workshops. They explored their cultural and self-identity by creating a personal bundles through record literacy (stories embedded in documents, like pictures) and object literacy (expressions of material culture). They were provided opportunities to purchase and produce items of enduring value by visiting a local thrift store and through a photovoice initiative. In honour of Indigenous storytelling, students shared onscreen interpretations of the bundles that were then stitched together to reflect the voices of the youth. We celebrated together with a group smudge, classroom feast, and in-school screenings of their digital compilations. This project was made possible by the Indigenous Cultural Initiatives Program and we appreciate Manitoba Sport, Culture, and Heritage for their assistance. The project team included Vanda Fleury-Green - Arts Educator, Jesse Green - StrongFront.tv, Kristy Sharpe - Classroom Teacher and Liason, Bernie Wolf Community School, Lisa Aymont Hunter - Ishkode Obimiwidoon, Indigenous Community Networker, and Billy Joe Green - Language Consultant and Musician, with special thanks to Leanne Simpson and Jason Drysdale. A heart felt thanks to everyone!
