Tuberculosis Missing Patients Research, video modules

A five-part film series produced by the Manitoba Indigenous Tuberculosis History Project (MITHP) that was developed to assist Indigenous families and communities searching for loved ones who were sent to tuberculosis (TB) sanatoriums and Indian hospitals in Manitoba and never returned home.

The content is specific to facilities that operated from the 1930’s to the 1960’s, but may also be relevant to patients from other provinces and the Arctic who received treatment in Manitoba.

Part 1 presents helpful start-up information, explaining how to gather useful details including names, dates, and locations, as well as providing advice on how to move forward with your research.

Next, it outlines three useful “Research Tips”: all of the various names of TB treatment hospitals in Manitoba commonly attended by Indigenous patients; instructions for undertaking database searches using keywords; and techniques for linking information between Indian Residential Schools and hospitals.

Parts 2 and 3 focus on research related to specific institutions where Indigenous patients were sent for treatment.

  • Part 2 covers research on patients who went to Dynevor Indian Hospital, Clearwater Lake Sanatorium, and Brandon Sanatorium.

  • ·       Part 3 covers research on Ninette Sanatorium, St. Boniface Sanatorium, and Norway House Indian Hospital.

Parts 4 and 5 share the experiences of two researchers: Walter Wastesicoot and Saul Day.

These videos accompany a written Missing Patient Research Guide that provides advice for beginning a search, case study examples, and hospital-specific information for searches. It is accessible digitally online. Print versions are also available although quantities may be limited.

If required, the Guide and the video files and can be sent to you or your organization on a USB flash drive. Please direct all inquiries to tbphotos@uwinnipeg.ca.
